Diversity/Educational Event of the Month:

Mama's Pot Roast Presents Freestyle Love Supreme

"This event created an amazingly fun and exciting Friday night alternative activity for First Friday freshmen. It showed them an interesting, hip, diverse, and immensely talented freestyle group that many freshmen were impressed to see at WashU. Freestyle Love Supreme showed that campus student groups (Mama's Pot Roast) care about the creative, cultural, and artistic world outside of our immediate WashU bubble and will put in the energy and effort to bring those cultural performance art groups to the students of WashU. This event persuaded many students to audition for improv comedy, performance art opportunities in the Performing Arts Department and within student groups such as Thyrsus and Cast and Crew, as well as Slam Poetry. The event also showed that young people of different ethnicities and races could all work together to create their own cohesive style of performance Freestyle. At WashU many student are being exposed to racial, socioeconomic, and religious diversity for the first time. Watching such an amazingly cohesive (and yet diverse) group of young adults seamlessly work together to make chillingly impressive harmonies of beats, poetry, words, and movement, likely was as inspirational for the Freshmen as it was for the Improv-lovers in the audience. The event was very successful. Many students came up to me raving about how wonderful the performance was. The impressive performance of Freestyle Love Supreme is still a topic of conversation weeks later."

Outreach/Community Service Event of the Month:

WU Cypher's The Reunion Vol.2: Bboy Exhibition Battles

"Breakdancing in itself is an extremely diverse dance style. It brings together aspects of all types and allows one to truly express his or herself positively and in a creative way. At this event, which is an annual "reunion" of the St. Louis local community breakdancers and the Wash U breakdancers, dancers were paired up to do a friendly exhibition "battle," or dance competition. There was a live DJ playing and an all-around very friendly and fun environment for the dancers and spectators alike. Aside from the actual exhibitions, there were open "cyphers," or circles of people formed that took place in between the battles. All people were encouraged to participate and showcase their different dance moves, whether it be breakdancing, popping, swing, salsa or any other style. The goal of bringing people together under a common interest of breakdancing and hip-hop culture in general was definitely met through this event. The exhibitions were aimed to get others who have never been exposed to the culture excited and eager to learn more. Another one of WU Cypher's main goals is to teach and pass along the art of breakdancing; this event has sparked many new member's interest and given us even more opportunity to teach our peers about our passion for dance. The positive effects of this program are that it facilitates a healthy interaction between students and local St. Louis community members and showcases an activity that is not only healthy towards the individual but also towards the campus community. It also breaks down stereotypes and preconceived notions of hip-hop culture, which currently is very skewed by the media and rap music. This programs has allowed us to show the great potential that hip-hop culture, specifically breakdancing, can bring to a community.

Social Event of the Month:

Contra's Men's Club Ultimate Frisbee Team's Contra Classic

"The 6th Annual Contra Classic, which is the Men's Club Ultimate Team's annual social event, is a 3-on-3 Ultimate Frisbee tournament held on the Swamp. The free event encouraged South Forty residents to take a break from their rigorous academics to enjoy remaining days of summer. The event was incredibly successfully because it was located centrally on the South 40 so that even students not playing could share in the fun and with plenty of gatorade, food, and music stick around and enjoy the tournament. And with CS40 sponsorship, the 9 Pointersauri left no one hungry. Out of the 12 teams that participated, the Swashhucklers prevailed in the single elimination tournament as the Contra Classic Champions."

CS40/NSA Member of the Month:

Monatrice Lam - CS40 Director of Development

"Monatrice worked all summer to ensure the success of the CS40\'s participation in Orientation. She organized the CS40 Orientation Events as well as CS40 publicity (through t-shirts, water bottles and more). While working tirelessly toward a great start for CS40 during orientation, Monatrice also developed the September CS40/XRHH Retreat to welcome the new College Councils. She planned all of the retreat logistics, coordinating student participation, retreat location and retreat activities. All CS40 events require a team effort, and without the support of all the officers our events would not have been possible, but it was Monatrice's planning and organization that got the events off the ground. Without Monatrice's enthusiasm for CS40, and her excitement for welcoming the newest members of the residential life community, CS40's success thus far would not have been possible."

Staff Members of the Month:

  Danielle Bristow -Director of Orientation

"You can not find a more qualified person than Danielle Bristow. I know of no one else who dedicates as much to their program as Danielle. She puts in countless hours working to make her program the best that it can be and endless hours on top of that making sure that not only do her students enjoy the program, but that they walk away having really benefited by being a part of it. She is caring, kind, thoughtful, and has always put her student staff before herself. She has transformed the concept of what it is to be a leader by developing the Student Associate position over the past two years and created one of the most valuable and worthwhile experiences an emerging leader on this campus could ask for. It is impossible for someone to work on her staff without making a solid connection to both her and her program and it is in large part due to her dedication to the program and her students."

Student Leader of the Month:

Zach Meyer - Lien Resident Advisor

"Zach is a great RA, always making the floor seem like a community, and being there for everyone. He is a leader in the WuSauce salsa dance group, which puts on shows for the ocmmunity and WashU students alike. Also, Zach seems to be everywhere at once. When not on RA duty, Zach doesn't simply leave campus to go off with his friends, or isolate himself. Instead, he is out on the 40, conversing with other students. He is always a leader when groups go to the loop, forest park, or any other off campus location. He is a true leader, and a vital part of the residential community."
