Diversity/Educational Event of the Month:
Reflection's Fat Talk Free Week
"During Fat Talk Free Week, members of Reflections stood at
the underpass and tabled in the DUC where they encouraged people to sign the
Fat Talk Free Pledge. The group also put up a poster campaign to get out the
word about Fat Talk and our pledge, and on Thursday we joined with CPC's Happy
Hour to promote our cause as well. The
goals of Fat Talk Free Week were to open up people's awareness to the huge
problem our society has with speaking negatively about our bodies and focusing
on a thin ideal body. For the week and beyond we wanted to get out the message
that this kind of talk should be stopped, that people should love their bodies
for what they are and what they can do. We can only hope that the community
latched on to these ideas last week, but we were happy with the positive
responses people gave and with the large number of people who came by to sign
the pledge."
Outreach/Community Service Event of the Month:
Chimes Junior Honorary's Chimes Week 2009
"Chimes Week 2009 is dedicated to raising awareness about the
St. Louis community. We put on daily events that sparked discussion about
different issues in Saint Louis culminating in a visit from Mayor Slay. The goal of the event was to raise awareness
about different facets of Saint Louis life and culture. We did this by
providing facts, bringing the mayor, and highlighting a local charity Lift for
Life.It provided a way for students to
learn more about the community that surrounds them and to see how by being a
member of the Washington University community, they have the opportunity to
influence Saint Louis."
Social Event of the Month:
KSA/KISS's Chuseok
"Chuseok is the annual Korean day of Thanksgiving; two
student groups, the Korean Students Association (to which I belong) and Korean
International Student Society, held this event, which featured traditional
Korean food, such as bulgolgi and kimchi, as well as presentations of Korean
culture, including the actual Chuseok ceremony performed and activities for
attendees (for example, Korean wrestling, called ssireum). The purpose of this event, as well as all
other events planned by KSA, was meant to bring together students of different
cultural backgrounds, encouraging dialogue and inspiring a passionate community
through Korean culture, outreach and vision. Chuseok was indeed well-attended
by people of unique perspectives, and were active participants throughout the
program.For three hours, Chuseok
brought a foreign nation to its participants directly; every major aspect of
the event was uniquely Korean. We hope that attendees were able to gain
increased tolerance and respect for cultures differing from their own. Chuseok
enabled them to see these distinctions and similarities, granting them the
opportunity to increase their understanding and appreciation of global cultures
and customs, and hopefully knowing more about their respective backgrounds as
well."
CS40/NSA Member of the Month:
Jef Snider - NSA member
"He is very committed to the vision of the North Side
Association and uses his initiative to set up these events. He's excited about
the possibilities for his programs and works to make them great! He's
committed to bringing the North Side community together. He has taken the lead on Monthly Service
Projects and setting up various contacts for us to extend our community service
reach off campus and engaging North Side Residents in service."
Staff Members of the Month:
Rhonda Kiely - Assistant Director of Residential Life
"Rhonda Kiely is one of the most underutilized student
resources on campus. Her article on dealing with difficult roommates was a
great resource that reached a great deal of students on the South 40. She
tirelessly works to advocate for students in the housing selection process and
with room changes. She is an advocate for students with disabilities by
ensuring that we have spaces available on the 40 that meet the needs of ALL
students. She is resource on campus that rarely gets recognition, but that has
a huge impact on the student experience. I am lucky to call her a colleague."
Student Leader of the Month:
Josephy Marcus - Student Union Senator
"Joseph Marcus is amazing. As a Senator, the amount of
successful projects he constantly has going is incredible. Along with Jake
Novick, he is responsible for the development of the SyllabiCentral project, which
aims to put all course syllabi online so students can see them before choosing
their courses for the next semester-- it's already gone incredibly far in just
the past few months. Joseph also is working on a project to reform the ArtSci
course evaluation system, as well as a larger project to promote relationships
and information sharing between student governments at WashU and other
universities. Beyond these aspects, Joseph is an incredible example of a
student leader. His remarks in Senate are never overly long, but always bring
up intriguing points that are valuable to the discussion. His passion for
making a difference on campus is clear, and even more importantly Joseph has
the skills and aptitude to make his ambitious goals reality."
